UNIT 4 VERTEBRATES
4.1 THE NEED TO CLASSIFY ANIMAL
We can classify animals based on their characteristics. When we classify
animals, we assign them into group. Classifying animals help us to identify and
understand them better.
4.2 INVERTEBRATES AND VERTEBRATES
Animals can be divided into 2 main groups, Invertebrates and Vertebrates.
Invertebrates are animals without backbone. Example snail, jellyfish, and
butterflies. Vertebrates are animals with backbone. Examples monkey, peacock,
goldfish, crocodiles.
4.3 MAMMALS
1.
Habitat: can be found in a wide variety of place.
2.
Body Covering: have hair on their bodies.
3.
Structure: most walk on four legs, some have wings and can fly. Others have
fish like shapes.
4.
Breathing: they use lungs to breathe.
5.
Reproduction: they give birth to their young. Babies of mammals feed on
their mother's milk.
4.4 BIRDS
1.
Habitat: they can be found in a wide variety of places.
2.
Body Covering: they have feathers on their body.
3.
Structure: they have a beak, two wings and two legs.
4.
Breathing: they use lungs to breathe.
5.
Reproduction: they reproduce by laying eggs with hard shells.
4.5 FISH
1.
Habitat: live in saltwater and freshwater.
2.
Body Covering: most have scales on their body.
3.
Structure: they have gills, gills cover, and fins.
4.
Breathing: they use gills to breathe.
5.
Reproduction: they reproduce by laying eggs.
4.6 AMPHIBIANS
1.
Habitat: they live both on land and water
2.
Body Covering: they have skin that is always kept moist.
3.
Structure: they have four legs that allow them to move on land and a tail
that allow them to swim.
4.
Breathing: adults breathe through their skin and lungs, their young breathe
through their gills.
5.
Reproduction: they reproduce by laying eggs in water.
4.7 REPTILES
1.
Habitat: they can be found both on land and water
2.
Body Covering: some have dry, scaly bodies. Others do not have scales nut
have bodies protected by a hard shell.
3.
Structure: most walks on four legs, some do not have legs.
4.
Breathing: they use lungs to breathe.
5.
Reproduction: most lay eggs with hard shells. The young are fully formed
and take care of themselves from the time they hatch.
